To begin off, I'd like to point out that the greater majority of rap music has to do with money and success, therefore I avoided the genre and the greater majority of liberation songs were found in the Christian music genre, which I actually enjoy, no offense to anyone who enjoys rap, it just happens to not be my cup of tea. Then again, I'm sure my first song listed isn't many peoples cup of tea either, seeing as its metalcore, but I also enjoy that.

Continuing on, the songs I found more of were surprisingly liberation, however I assume it's because I knew what I was looking for. There were quite a few songs I would've used in the success category, however I also assumed they would have already have been used by other people. One of the biggest things I discovered is that there were in fact many songs about success, but more songs about person liberation and freedom. What it seems to me is that people feel more satisfied with the feeling of being free rather than just having money and being successful. Being successful and being free can sometimes seem similar but couldn't be any different. When comparing Hinduism to American Pop songs they are actually surprisingly alike, having money, success, and fame seem to be generally respected all around, but at the same time (although not depicted by the songs lyrics, but more so the artists themselves) that money has not made them happy, some artists don't enjoy fame. Liberation however, is what seems to leave them more satisfied and willing to write a more meaningful song about the subject.

  1. I liked the comparison that you made between success and liberation. Liberation can take you somewhere or make you feel something different that anything in the world can not amount to. Success can be just momentary, seeing business and people go up and down the wave, but have your personal freedom and liberation is the primal right that if taken away and restored, means more than anything else could

  2. I agree with your point about liberation being a more lasting satisfaction than that of success, in the sense of wealth, fame, and power. But I also think there are a lot of songs out there about success in different forms, such as success measured by raising good children, or maintaining a health marriage. Success, when measured that way, seems to leave one with a deeper sense of fulfillment.

  3. I agree with Chelsea. Don't forget about the little everyday victories. People get so caught up in wanting to make millions or be famous, when they should really be focusing on the little things that make them happy. Potty-training my puppy was a success, so was losing weight, and getting an A on my paper. The feelings from those victories can be just as lasting as having material things. Trust me, not having a puppy pee on the carpet is a good feeling that lasts!

  4. I really thought the points that you made were really great and things I never thought about. I agree completely with the fact that people would much rather be free then be successful. Success can be taken away in any moment but liberation is something that is very hard to take away from someone who has achieved it.

  5. I like the fact that you avoided rap and hip hop songs while choosing songs about success. Almost every blog I look at has a Drake song or something of the sort. Your choices are putting success in a different light, and that is refreshing.
